Product Description

Yak butter lamps in front of Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, TibetYak butter lamps in front of more then 1300 years old Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, Tibet

The Jokhang monastery is located in the city center area of narrow streets at a public square. It is the most important and sacred temple for many Tibetans. In a small building at the entrance of the temple I saw these yak candles burning. The light and the smoke of the lamps give a wonderful atmosphere to the picture. Perhaps to prevent a devastating fire in the more then 1300 years old monastery, these butter lamps are in a separate place?

Pilgrims and visitors supply the butter to gain merit. The yak butter lamps help to concentrate during meditation. The lamps emit a characteristic odor which brings back memories of the beautiful Himalayan region to anyone who recognizes it.
